Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO)

AEO is the practice of being the clearest source on a question, so a system that answers instead of listing can use your page. It is a useful idea with a misleading price tag: everything it asks you to do was already SEO. Here is the definition, the comparison, and what an honest engagement contains.

Part of SEO, from $1,500+GST/monthNo separate AEO retainer

Someone asks: what does a switchboard upgrade involve?

Page A: quality service, competitive prices
Page B: answer in the first sentence, specifics included
Page C: the answer is behind a quote form
Page D: 2,000 words, no direct statement anywhere

Only 1 of those is quotable. That gap is the whole of AEO, and it was always the whole of writing a good page.

Question → Clearest source

AI Overview

Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the practice of making a page the clearest and most directly usable source on a question, so a system that returns a composed answer rather than a list of links can use it. Answer engines include Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot, plus older features like featured snippets. In practice AEO describes 4 long-standing SEO habits: answer in the opening sentence, structure the page around real questions, keep facts explicit and consistent, and be worth quoting. Loudachris treats AEO as part of SEO from $1,500+GST/month, not as a separate retainer.

Definition

What answer engine optimisation actually means.

Strip the marketing off and AEO is a single idea: when a machine has to compose an answer, it needs a source that already states the answer. Pages that hedge, sprawl, or hold the specifics back until you fill in a form give it nothing to work with. Pages that say the thing plainly do.

That is a real observation about how retrieval behaves. It is not a new discipline. Every part of it was already in the SEO playbook, and most of it was in the technical-writing playbook decades before that. What changed is the visibility of the consequence: a badly written page used to just rank poorly, and now it also gets skipped by the summary sitting above the rankings.

We are saying this on a page selling our own services, which is the awkward part. If AEO is SEO, we cannot invoice you twice for it, and we do not. The commercial offer at the bottom of this page is a free diagnostic that tells you whether you have a visibility problem worth spending money on, with the scope written down.

Answer engine

Any system that replies with a composed answer instead of a ranked list. Newer examples get the attention, but featured snippets and People Also Ask were doing a simpler version of it years earlier.

Optimisation

Making the page easier to read, easier to verify and easier to quote. That is the whole mechanism. There is no control panel and no submission process.

What it is not

It is not a file you upload, a schema type you add, or a placement you buy. Anyone describing it that way is selling an artefact instead of an outcome.

The 4 habits the acronym is describing.

Read them, then ask which one your SEO provider is not already responsible for.

1

Answer in the first sentence

The specific claim, number, condition or yes-or-no goes directly under the heading, before the context. A reader on a phone gets what they came for in 1 glance, and a system extracting a sentence has a sentence worth extracting. This habit carries the most weight and takes the least budget.

2

Structure around real questions

Headings that match how the question is actually asked, 1 intent per page, and sections that finish an idea rather than trailing into a call to action. Standard information architecture, applied with more discipline than a brochure site usually gets.

3

Keep the facts explicit

Service areas named, inclusions listed, conditions stated, pricing given as a real range with what moves it. Vagueness is not a negotiating position. It is a reason to be left out of the answer, and it costs you human enquiries first.

4

Be worth quoting

Accuracy, a named author accountable for the page, dates on anything time-sensitive, and enough reputation that referencing you is a safe choice. That is E-E-A-T under another label, assessed the same way it has been for years.

AEO vs SEO

The comparison, line by line.

Left column is how AEO is sold. Middle column is where the same practice already lived. Right column is our verdict.

Sold as AEOWhere it already livedVerdict
Optimise for answer enginesOptimise for search engines, which now render answers as well as linksSame engines, new output format
Answer-first contentLead with the conclusion, the practice behind featured snippets and plain readabilityNot new
Question-shaped headingsHeading structure mapped to real query intentNot new
Entity clarityConsistent name, address, services and correct schema.org markupNot new
Citation-worthinessAccuracy, authority and a page other people are willing to referenceNot new
Conversational query targetingLong-tail keyword research, standard for over a decadeNot new
Measuring mentions in AI answersRank tracking and reporting, which do not cover these surfaces wellGenuinely newer, and the only part we treat separately

6 of those 7 rows describe work your SEO retainer should already cover. The 7th, measurement, is the one we treat separately, because rank tracking genuinely does not tell you what an assistant said about you. That single honest gap is the reason this hub exists, and it is the only thing we built a product around. The rest of the argument sits on what actually works.

The Scope, Written Down

What an AEO engagement would honestly contain.

Suppose someone sold you a genuine AEO retainer with nothing invented in it. Below is what would have to be in it. Hold it beside your existing SEO scope of work and the overlap is the point of this page.

Question and query research

Keyword research

Working out what your customers actually type and say, in their words rather than your internal product names.

Heading and page architecture

On-page SEO

A single page per intent, headings that match how the question gets asked, and no burying the answer 600 words down.

Answer-first writing

Content and copywriting

The specific claim, number or condition stated in the opening sentence, with the reasoning kept underneath it.

Factual and schema.org consistency

Technical SEO

Name, address, phone, hours, services and pricing that agree everywhere, marked up with standard vocabulary.

Off-site data and review depth

Local SEO

Google Business Profile completeness, directory consistency, and a steady flow of genuine reviews.

Authority building

Off-page SEO

Being referenced by sources a system already treats as reliable, earned rather than bought.

Measurement and reporting

Reporting, extended

The 1 line with real new content: recording what assistants return for your questions, repeatedly.

6 of the 7 lines are ordinary SEO deliverables with a different label on the invoice. The 7th is reporting, extended to cover surfaces that rank trackers were never built for. If a proposal in front of you contains anything outside this list, ask what published guidance supports it before you sign. If it contains exactly this list, ask why it is priced on top of the SEO you already buy.

The Short Version

The parts of the AEO pitch that do not survive checking.

Everything below is checkable against published documentation rather than an opinion. This is a sample of 3. The full teardown, with every claim and its status, is on what actually works in AI search, so it is stated once instead of repeated across the hub.

Sold asStatus
llms.txt fileGoogle states you do not need to create new AI text files or markup
Content chunking for AIGoogle states there are no additional requirements or special optimisations
Guaranteed AI citationsNo published guidance describes any mechanism for buying or securing a placement

Worked Example

Being the clearest source on 1 question.

Say you install split systems across the Adelaide Hills, and a customer asks whether you cover Mount Barker. Here is the same answer written 2 ways. Neither version needs a new budget line, new markup, or a new agency.

Vague version

“We proudly service Adelaide and all surrounding areas with quality workmanship and competitive rates. Get in touch today for an obligation-free quote tailored to your needs.”

Nothing in that paragraph answers the question. A reader still has to ring to find out, and a system composing an answer has no sentence it can safely lift. It also reads like every other page in the vertical, which is its own ranking problem.

Clear version

“Yes. We install and service split systems in Mount Barker, Littlehampton and Nairne, Tuesday to Friday. Standard back-to-back installs are quoted from the photos you send. Anything through a double-brick wall or above a single storey needs a site visit first.”

Same business, same facts, 1 difference: the answer is the first thing on the page instead of the reward for persistence. The reader is served, and the sentence is quotable as a side effect. That is AEO in its entirety.

The formatting rules behind the clear version

  • Lead with yes, no, or the number. Context goes after it, never before it.
  • Use the customer's phrasing in the heading, not your internal service name.
  • Name the actual places, inclusions and exceptions. Specifics are what make a sentence usable.
  • Keep 1 idea per paragraph so a section can be understood without the paragraph above it.
  • Use a table when the question compares options and a list when it has steps.
  • Say when the information was last checked, especially for anything with a price on it.

Note what is absent from that list: no file to install, no markup invented for machines, no rewriting your pages into fragments. The rules are all readability rules, which is why they were already in the job.

The Commercial Bit

What we sell is the measurement, not a new discipline.

We do not have AI-search case studies and we are not going to invent any. What we have is a diagnostic: we ask the questions your customers ask, across several assistants and several phrasings, and record what comes back. Whether you appear. Which of your pages gets referenced. Who gets named instead. Repeated enough times to separate a pattern from a coincidence.

That is the only part of this subject where a rank tracker leaves you blind, so it is the only part we treat as its own task. The audit is free and its scope is published, which means you can read exactly what you get before you ask for it. If it finds nothing wrong, we will tell you that and you have lost nothing.

Free

The diagnostic costs nothing and carries no obligation. The scope is written down rather than described on a call.

$1,500+GST/mo

If a fix is warranted, it is SEO, at our published SEO pricing. There is no AEO surcharge and there never will be.

0

Guarantees offered about placement in any AI answer, because selection is probabilistic and nobody controls it.

Our published results are SEO and Google Ads outcomes for named clients. They are not AI search outcomes, and we do not present them as such.

Questions about answer engine optimisation.

What is answer engine optimisation?
Answer engine optimisation is the practice of making a page the clearest and most directly usable source for a specific question, so that a system returning an answer rather than a list of links can use it. The term covers 4 habits: answering the question in the opening sentence, structuring the page around questions real people ask, keeping the facts explicit and consistent, and being an authority worth quoting. Every one of those habits predates the acronym and belongs to ordinary SEO.
Is AEO different from SEO?
Not in what it asks you to do. AEO is a framing of SEO for a moment when search engines return prose answers instead of only blue links. The underlying work is the same work: research the questions, structure the page, state the facts plainly, mark up the entity, earn the authority. What is genuinely newer is measurement, because the surfaces that now paraphrase your page are harder to track than a ranking position. That is the part worth paying attention to.
What counts as an answer engine?
Any system that responds to a question with a composed answer rather than a ranked list of documents. That includes Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot, and it also includes older features like featured snippets and the People Also Ask box, which were doing a simpler version of the same thing years before the acronym existed. The category is older than the marketing around it.
Do I need to hire an AEO agency?
You need someone doing competent SEO. If your current provider already researches the questions your customers ask, structures your pages around them, keeps your business data consistent and marks it up properly, you are already having AEO done for you under a different name. If they are not doing that work, the problem is the SEO, not a missing AEO product. Before buying anything, read what we think of the AEO agency pitch.
What would an AEO service actually deliver?
Question research, heading and page structure work, answer-first writing, factual and schema.org consistency, off-site data and review depth, authority building, and reporting. Compare that list against an SEO scope of work and you find the same 7 items. We publish the list on this page rather than behind a call, because once it is written down the honest conclusion is hard to avoid.
How should I format an answer on the page?
Put the answer in the first sentence under the heading, in plain language, with the specifics included rather than promised further down. Use the question as the heading if that is genuinely how people ask it. Keep 1 idea per paragraph. Use a table when the question is comparative and a list when the question has steps. Then write the rest of the section for the reader who wants the detail. That order serves a person skimming on a phone and a system extracting a sentence equally well.
Does AEO need special schema or an llms.txt file?
No. There is no schema.org vocabulary built for generative AI, and Google's AI features documentation states that you do not need to create new machine-readable files, AI text files or markup to appear in these features. Standard schema.org markup, applied correctly, is the real work and it sits inside technical SEO. Charging a separate fee to add a file with no documented consumer is charging for an artefact, not an outcome.
Can an agency promise my business will appear in an AI answer?
No, and the mechanism is the reason. Citation selection is probabilistic and varies by phrasing, session and model version, so the same question asked twice can return different sources. Anyone offering a fixed placement is selling something they do not control. What can be improved is the quality and consistency of what a system finds when it looks, which is what good SEO has always improved.
How much do AEO services cost in Australia?
AEO is usually sold as an addition to an existing SEO retainer, at whatever the provider chooses to charge. We do not add a line for it. Our SEO starts from $1,500+GST/month, and the work described on this page sits inside that scope. See the SEO pricing guide for what moves that number.
How do I know whether I have an AEO problem at all?
Measure before you buy. Ask the questions your customers ask, across several assistants and several phrasings, and record what comes back: whether you appear, which pages get referenced, and which competitors get named instead. Repeat it so you can tell a pattern from a one-off. That is exactly what our free AI search audit does, and its scope is published rather than described on a call.
Will writing answer-first make my pages worse to read?
Only if it is done badly. Answer-first is a reading-order decision, not a rewrite into fragments. You are moving the conclusion to the top and keeping the reasoning underneath, which is how a good news article and a good instruction manual have always worked. What does damage a page is chopping it into disconnected blocks to please an imagined machine reader. Write the clearest version for a person and the extraction takes care of itself.
Is AEO worth doing for a local service business?
The habits are worth doing, and they are worth doing whether or not you ever see an AI answer mention you. Clear service pages that state the areas covered, what is included, what it costs and what happens next win enquiries from human readers first. Local visibility still runs on reviews, profile completeness and consistent business data, which is the ground covered by local SEO. Start there, measure honestly, and let the evidence decide what else is warranted.
